WNL Studies for Adults

Christianity's Family Tree
January 6 - March 17
Leader: Aleeta Christian
In Christianity's Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why, Adam Hamilton presents a generous, inspiring vision of eight Christian denominations and faith traditions. Comparing the Christian family to our own extended families, he contends that each denomination has a unique, valuable perspective to offer on the Christian faith.

Invitation to John
January 13 - April 28
Leader: Rev. LeNoir Culbertson
The invitation from Christ is: "Come and see. Follow me." Experience the magnificent passages in John including the I Am statements (I am the truth, the life and the way, I am the living water and more). Revisit stories only told in John's gospel including Nicodemus, Mary Magdalene and the raising of Lazarus.

On Ma Journey Now
February 24 - March 17
Leader: Rev. Jared Wilson
On Ma Journey Now is a 4-week Lenten study based on African American spirituals. This study was written by Gwendolyn Brown-Felder, a minister at Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church in Nashville.

Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White
April 7 - May 5
Leader: Rev. Brian Marcoulier
Everyone agrees the America is polarized, with ever-hardening positions held by people less and less willing to listen to one another. No one agrees on what to do about it. One solution that hasn't yet been tried, says Adam Hamilton, is for thinking persons of faith to model for the rest of the country a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us. Hamilton rejects the easy assumptions and sloppy analysis of black and white thinking, seeking instead the truth that resides on all sides of the issues, and offering a faithful and compassionate way forward.

Intergenerational Events

Chili Cook Off and Dessert Contest
Epiphany Celebration
January 6
Are you ready to put your chili cooking skills to the test? Then we would like to invite you to compete in our 2010 Chili Cook Off! Folks are also invited to bring desserts to share for our dessert contest. Desserts will be voted on by those in attendance with chili being voted on by a panel of highly qualified judges (well...maybe highly qualified has more to do with how much they love chili!) If you would like to participate in our Chili Cook Off, please sign us with Pastor Brian.

"We have seen his star in the east and have come to worship the newborn King." Join us after dinner on January 6, as we celebrate the story of the magi traveling to Bethlehem bearing gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh for the Christ-child. Our festivities will conclude with a short intergenerational service in which we will "chalk the door" of the church as a way of asking God's blessing on all thos4e who gather in our church for worship and service.

Mardi Gras Night
Jazz Communion Service
February 10
Join us for a special Mardi Gras-"esque" celebration on Wednesday, February 10. Our dinner for the evening will feature traditional cuisine from New Orleans sponsored by the UM Men. The evening will conclude with a toe-tappin', finger-snappin', hand-clappin' worship experience in the Sanctuary featuring the most celebrated Jazz tunes in the Big Easy with Holy Communion. It will be an experience no to be missed!

Ash Wednesday Service
February 17
Sanctuary
Join us for this yearly service marking the beginning of the Lenten season on February 17 at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary. The service will follow the traditional Liturgy of the day and will include the imposition of ashes.

Africa Water Well Benefit Dinner

Fellowship Hall
The youth of Madison Street UMC will provide dinner and the program on May 12 to benefit the Water Well project that they have been working on. They are raising, with the support of the congregation, $15,000 to drill a water well in Kenya!

Spring Ring

MSUMC Chapel
Join us for an evening of wonderful music presented by the Laudate Ringers and the Ring for Joy Handbell Choirs!

WNL Studies for Youth

The MSUMC Youth will be joining Aleeta Christian's class to study Christianity's Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why by Adam Hamilton.

WNL Studies for Children

Bible Fun Zone: Exploring the Life of Christ
(age 3 - 1st grade)
Bible Fun Zone will offer children an opportunity to explore the life of Christ throughout the Spring semester. Children will learn about the life of Jesus through stories, songs, games, art projects, and other activities. This will be an exciting time to build on the Christmas story and remind children that Jesus is more that just a baby born in Bethlehem. We hope everyone can join us!
