Cliff's Message For This Sunday

Dear Friends at Madison Street,

Let me begin this week’s email by expressing my sincere gratitude to you for your presence at our Sunday worship service.  Last week the weather was terrible and then the electricity went off, but when it was time to worship our sanctuary was full!  It means a lot, and it says a lot about you and your faithfulness, and it also speaks volumes to our visitors each Sunday.  It lets them know that something special is going on here and that this is important.

Your presence is especially needed over the next few weeks as our sanctuary repair is ongoing.  There’s more scaffolding in the ceiling this week than ever before.  I’m not kidding—it’s amazing.  If you get bored by the sermon you can just be amazed by the scaffolding!  Again your presence makes a bigger difference than you might realize, so I’m really encouraging everyone to be present if possible.  I know during the summer months we’ll all be away from time to time.  That’s why we need everyone else to be here.

This Sunday we begin to shift gears a bit by focusing on the spiritual aspect of Living A Better Story, and I’ll say more about that later.  For now I want to emphasize that we often misunderstand what it means to be spiritual.  You, perhaps, have an image right now which may or may not be all there is to being spiritual.

To begin our journey we’re going to look at the old familiar story of David and Goliath this Sunday.  One of the things I’ve noticed about life is that not all the giants of life are named Goliath.  In fact, the giants of life come in all kinds of shapes and forms and with all kinds of names.  I bet you’ve found a few yourself and perhaps are facing one now.  I believe there are valuable lessons for folks like us from this wonderful old story.  I believe there’s more here than you might think—but what is it?

I hope to see you Sunday in the midst of all the scaffolding.  Our sermon is entitled, “When It’s Time to Face a Giant.”  You might want to read I Samuel 17 to get ready.  I can hardly wait!

See you Sunday!

Cliff C. Wright, Jr.
